I've been wondering the same thing since the 1970's. Although there's more women in IT than when I was young, the trends have stalled. I am not a father of daughters, and thus have even more reason to consider the issue. The Anita Borg Institute ( http://anitaborg.org/ ) have been studying and addressing the issue for a long time, as researchers and activists. (Wandering here from a link you posted on Jeri Ellesworth’s Facebook page, whom I don’t know, but it appears many of my friends do).
