How to Right Click on the Mac

One of the things many Windows users who are moving to the Mac find frustrating is the lack of a right click.  What many don’t know is that the Mac does support right click!

In fact, Mac has supported right click since OS 8!  A little background before we begin.

Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple, Inc. has OCD.  Seriously.  Steve is passionate about Apple computers being artistic, with clean lines.  He’s also just as passionate about the Mac being an OS anyone can use, and one that doesn’t behave in a way that is either buggy or non-intuitive.  Imagine trying to explain to your grandmother what a right-click is.  Steve will have none of that!  But also imagine a mouse button on the mouse, it causes unclean design lines.  Steve will have none of that either!

However, Steve is a brilliant man, even with his OCD, and because of that, the Mac DOES have a right mouse button.  It’s just not needed (unless you want it) and it’s invisible!  Whether you have a new Magic Mouse or the previous generation Mighty Mouse, both of these mice have touch sensors under the cover.  They know whether you are right or left clicking just by the placement of your finger!

To enable right-clicks in OSX you need to go to your system preferences.

From the System Preferences window, under hardware, click on Mouse (if you’re on a notebook, you can also enable some nice features for right-clicking with two fingers under Trackpad).

Now, under Mouse, click the box next to Secondary Click (Right).

That’s all there is to it!  You’ve just enabled right-clicking on the Mac under OSX!

One word of advice for newbies.  The Mighty Mouse and Magic Mouse both need you to lift your finger off of the left side of the mouse before you right click.  This isn’t a bug.  It’s by design, because the mouse has to have a way to sense when you left and right click at the same time.

  1. I’d like to add Mr. Big Geek, which I am sure you know, but it might help your readers.

You can also right click on the Mac by holding down the Control key (control, ctrl) while left clicking.
