How to stop Windows 7 from Highlighting newly installed programs

Windows 7 is very good at annoying me.  I’d bet you too!  In fact, we find Windows 7, second to Vista is probably the most annoying operating system on the planet!  In this tutorial we’re going to show you how to stop it from being so annoying by showing you how to disable one of it’s most annoying features – Newly Installed Application Highlighting.

You’ve probably noticed Windows 7 Highlighting all your new apps in the start menu.  In this example, we just installed Microsoft Silverlight.  In our start menu you can see it highlighted.

Let’s get rid of this annoyance once and for all!  Navigate to your Control Panel and choose Taskbar and Start Menu (Click Start –> Click Control Panel –> Click Taskbar and Start Menu).

In the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties window, click the Start Menu tab at the top.

Now click on the Customize… button.  In the Customize Start Menu window scroll down and find “Highlight Newly Installed Programs”.

Uncheck the box next to “Highlight Newly Installed Programs.”  Click OK to close each open box.  You’re done!  Windows will no longer highlight newly installed programs!  It’s really that simple!

  1. You know, we make it even easier, instead of going to control panel, just right click anywhere on the taskbar that’s empty and click properties. Takes you to the same screen without going to the control panel.
