How to use a System Restore Point in Windows 7

We discussed in How to Create a System Restore Point in Windows 7 how to actually create a system restore point.  In this article we’ll take you through the process of recovering a restore point and recovering your settings.

Before starting a system restore, please close all applications.  Windows will automatically reboot during the restore process and may not give you the option of saving your data.

In order to recover a system restore point we need to navigate to the control panel and click system (Click Start –> click Control Panel –> click System).

Now click on the Advanced system settings in the left top menu.

To access the system restore features, click on the tab at the top named System Protection.

Under the section labeled “System Restore” click on the button named System Restore…

Windows will welcome you to the system restore wizard.  Click Next.

Windows will present you with a list of System Restore Points. Select the system restore point that you want to recover from.  It will likely be listed as type Manual.  However, you’ll likely see other system restore points that were auto generated by Windows, such as when installing Office Professional Plus 2010, or Visio Premium 2010 as listed in our example.

Select the Restore Point you wish to use and click Next.

Windows will ask you to review your selection.  Once you’re sure you picked the right restore point, in our case TheGeekPub, click Finish.

Windows will warn you that this process can not be interrupted.  Click Yes to continue.

Windows will prepare the restore point and then automatically reboot your system. When windows comes back up you will be presented with a dialog with details of your successful system restore.

And you’re done.  Any system settings changes you made after the creation of your restore point have been reverted.

It’s really that simple!
